/The bridge between science and teacher practice/

/About

Code-Ed demystifies the way written English works and makes it accessible to all teachers and students through explicitly teaching:

  • The alphabetic code (phonemes and graphemes)
  • The meaning system of English (morphology)
  • The most reliable spelling rules and conventions

I have known Joy Allcock for some decades as the ‘Queen’ of teaching the skills of reading and spelling.

- Professor John Hattie

/Research

The unique Code-Ed approach developed by Joy Allcock, M.Ed., was validated by a two-year research study—the Shine Literacy Project. Using a teaching resource called Sounds Like Fun (now The Code Is the Key), the research showed that:

  • It is possible to accelerate students’ progress even if they come to school without a solid foundation of early literacy knowledge.
  • 10 minutes a day of targeted instruction can pull together the key skills and knowledge that are critical for literacy success.
  • The intervention levelled the playing field for all students, regardless of ethnicity or socioeconomic status.

The data from this project indicate that the Sounds Like Fun approach is related to impressive gains made by the Trial group for key literacy outcome variables, including reading comprehension, reading accuracy, word identification and spelling.
